Mountain Class Barn Quilts

By Caroline Grooms

About the Business

I design and construct barn quilts. Barn quilts are pieces of wood that are painted to look like quilt blocks. They come in all sizes and colors and are used to represent the home in which they are placed. Traditionally, they are larger pieces that are placed on the outside of a barn or shed, but can be used indoors over your fireplace as well. Imagine one outside on your front porch or chicken coop, or a smaller one hanging off your mailbox! Each National Park or Trail has a barn quilt pattern, and many regions or towns have adopted their own quilt patterns as well! Google Barn Quilts and let your mind be blown!

Why did you start your business?

I started Mountain Class Quilts as a hobby, as many side jobs start, because I fell in love with the barn quilts I was seeing in Watauga County. I learned all about the North Carolina Barn Quilt Trails and fell in love with how a simple piece of wood could tell such a story. The first quilt I made was for my mom (mom’s are always the best test dummies and will always be your biggest fan) and she put it on her front porch.

What do you enjoy most about your business?

Painting the quilts is a stress relief from my 8-5 office job and gives me the opportunity to reflect a family or individual in a beautiful way. Getting to know my clients and understanding why they chose a certain pattern or color choice is like reading the best story ever written! Some of my favorite quilts are ones that have a story behind them, not because they are the easiest to create.

Other Information

Currently I offer 3 sizes options: 4’x4′ @$75, 2’x2′ @$35, and 4’x2′ @ $50. I am looking to start offering smaller 1’x1′ quilts soon! Quilts can be done on 1/4 or 1/2 inch wood depending on where you plan to hang it. All quilts are sealed in your choice of Gloss or Matte sealer that prevents mold, mildew, and yellowing from UV light.

You can order a quilt by either requesting a custom order or by selecting a ready to go quilt that is posted in my “For Sale” album on Facebook. Please email or Facebook message me with your thoughts, color preferences, or Pinterest Pins, and I will get to work! It takes on average about a week and a half for me to a quilt.

Chickadee Photography

By Haley Madden

About the Business

Photography business located in Waynesville, NC specializing in portraits and family photography.

Why did you start your business?

In graduate school I wanted a way to make some extra income while also having a flexible schedule. I’ve always been drawn to photography, so I invested in a camera and I am continuing to accrue lenses. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I named by business “Chickadee Photography” because I referred to my preschoolers at the time as my “Chickadees” and I knew I wanted a family-focused business.

What do you enjoy most about your business?

My favorite part about this business is meeting new people, because people have the most fascinating stories. Looking through my lens and capturing what life is like for a family during the first few days with their new baby, or witnessing a couple start their lives together; those kind of moments in life are the stories I get to tell. It’s always a humbling and deeply moving experience when people openly let you become a participant in their story.

Younique

By Melissa Loveless

About the Business

The official mission of Younique is to uplift, empower, and validate women. If I were to describe this business in my own words and experiences, I would say that Younique is so much more than makeup and skin care. It’s building relationships with people. It’s life changing, financially and personally.

Why did you start your business?

I started my business in spite of my old job. I wasn’t happy where I was, and the few friends I knew who sold Younique always seemed to have so much fun. Once I realized the support and community that came with this business, I was thrilled to have chosen this company. Another reason is that I loved the products, and the presenter kit was (and still is) only $99. I was considering buying a few things in the kit anyway, which those products by themselves would have been more than the $99, so I joined, bought the other products I wanted that didn’t come in the kit, and I got a discount. If I decided not to sell, I still had awesome product at a dang good discount.

What do you enjoy most about your business?

I am a relationship driven person. I can’t tell you how many people I have met in this company, who I adore, who I never would have met otherwise. Because of this business, I have been able to build relationships with people I haven’t spoken with in a long time because this is more than just selling products. It’s more than makeup. A lot of it is focusing on self-care, whatever that looks like for you. For us, it’s skincare, community, and makeup when we need that extra boost of confidence.

I’m in a place where I have a solid 8-5 job, so I am doing okay financially. But this business is so fun, and it’s extra fun to make additional money (we get paid 3 hours after every sale). This business gives me the financial freedom that allows me to do things/purchase things without having to worry about stretching the budget from my 8-5 paycheck.

I like that you don’t have to be one type of person to do this; I wear makeup, three times a week, maximum. I’m absolutely not a salesperson. If I can do it, you can do it.

Other Information

Sometimes when people see the prices of the products, they have a little bit of sticker-shock, and I completely understand that! But think about it this way: you’ll spend around $10 a month on foundation at CVS or Walmart, but with Younique’s foundation, you’ll spend $39, but you’ll get 4+ months out of it, so you’re essentially paying in bulk for better quality products. Another thing that I love about the products is that Younique is compliant with the European standard for skin care and makeup, which means the quality is significantly better than the American standard. Each product has an ingredient list on the website, and if you aren’t familiar with an ingredient, it tells you the purpose and what it does for the product.

Jen Lin Designs NC

By Jenny Osbourne

About the Business

Jen Lin Designs is an Etsy shop that sells flour sack towels and canvas pillow covers that are designed by me or designed by my customers.

Why did you start your business?

I am a former classroom teacher and after moving from the western side of NC to the east side, I began teaching summer arts and craft camps in my home. I planned those first art camps because orthodontist bills and other extra expenses were popping up as our children continued to get older.

Before moving east, I felt like I was in a creative dry spell. My days were full with a different stage of life. Full of diapers, chasing toddlers, and homeschooling (a wonderful time but I didn’t make time to create!!). I started wondering if I had ever been creative. The campers and I began working with different mediums and a switch went off. I wanted to create more and more. I started making time for more (and doing the same for my own 3 kids). During one of those moments, I began designing and creating towels to give as gifts. When I started getting calls to make personalized gifts for others too, Jen Lin Designs was born. It was frightening to open my etsy shop and wonder if anyone would find me and then be interested in buying something I made. I am blown away and humbled each time I hear the notification that another item has sold.

What do you enjoy most about your business?

My favorite part of Jen Lin Designs is working with my customers on custom designs. I love hearing all of their amazing ideas and creating something that they had a part in designing and can then give to others. I love all the variety of the custom designs as well. My customers are so creative!!!

Other Information

Jen Lin flour sack towels and pillow covers are printed with non-toxic ink. The designs are either screen printed or printed with a type of stencil. Our top sellers are the personalized wedding towels and wedding pillow covers. We can use a wedding invitation or announcement to create a one-of-a-kind gift for you to have or for you to give. You can also choose from our many wedding/anniversary designs as well as our seasonal designs and other Jen Lin designs.

Why did you start your business?

When I graduated college I got a job as a PRN Recreational Therapist. Since I wasn’t working full time I had to find something to help fill my time. I have always loved crafting and getting creative. Pinterest project began to fill my free time and when I would post pictures of my daily creations I was surprised by the feedback I was getting. One day I just went for it. I opened up an Etsy shop with some of my items. That when this hobby of mine took off and turned into a little side business. Before long I was filling order after order, setting up booths at local events in the area, and really just dedicating all of my extra free time to making things!

What do you enjoy most about your business?

This one is hard because there is so much I enjoy! I think the biggest thing for me is the excitement we get from customers when they receive their items. It is so rewarding for me to see people fall in love with the items that we create. It’s reassuring to know that the time, detail, and love that we put into each piece doesn’t go unnoticed. Seeing excitement, getting those messages of happiness, It makes it all worth it!
