I don’t know what it is about large appliances that is suddenly so interesting once you are an adult. When I was single, I wouldn’t blink twice at the appliance section of a store. But ever since I got married, one of our favorite things to do is go browse the kitchen section at Home Depot or Lowes. It’s like one of our go-to dates now. Anyone else have super exciting marriage dates like us?
Well we finally actually have a legitimate reason to be shopping the appliance section. We are buying a house! So now we are in need of a refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, and microwave. This is bittersweet for me because my inner penny-pincher is warring with the adult female side of me that drools over kitchen appliances. However, it is an actual need so you gotta do what you gotta do. I needed to find a way to save big on appliances ASAP.
What the Appliance Industry Doesn’t Want You To Know
Just recently, we were in Home Depot looking at the appliance options and creating our budget for the house. We were approached by a staff member who was able to answer several of our questions about the different models. Of course we got around to prices and asking more specific questions about the July 4th sales that the store was promoting. The promotion stickers looked like this:
These deals are for major appliances like a refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave, washer, and dryer.
As you can see, they are offering deals like $300 off the 4 piece black stainless steel package from Samsung. There is also the offer of getting instant savings that increases based on how many pieces you purchase. However, they must be major appliances priced at $498 or more and the microwave must be at least $248 to qualify for the instant savings. Still pretty good deals though, if you are looking to outfit your whole kitchen like we are.
Since our home won’t be finished until November, we were curious if this was a once a year, amazing sale that we couldn’t pass by. The deals were pretty good after all. Luckily, this staff member was super helpful and forthcoming with great tips. This is what he told us…
Stores don’t really set prices, the appliance industry does.
He explained that the stores do not really have much wiggle room when it comes to setting the prices on their appliances. The appliance industry, made up of all the big name players (LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, etc), are the ones that set the price points on large appliances. The stores get this information and then follow suit.
After we thought about it, this made sense. Of course the manufactures of the product are going to set the pricing standards for the products. This ensures that they make the profit that they want off their merchandise. Stores can then take these prices and do small sales as they see fit, which will entice customers to buy, as long as they don’t price the appliances below market prices.
How this helps you save big on appliances…
This wonderful Home Depot employee continued on to explain that industry-wide there are two times during the year where the best sales and best prices on appliances are promoted…
July 4th sales and Black Friday sales.
He told us that the prices are never better than during these times of the year. Furthermore, he said that while the July 4th sales are great, the Black Friday sales are even better.
The absolute BEST time to buy large appliances is during Black Friday sales.
So if you happen to be in the market for appliances and you need them in the near future, this is a great time to buy! But if you are like us, and don’t have an immediate need, definitely wait until the Black Friday sales. These sales will help you really save big on appliances! And who doesn’t like that?!
